Scope and content Included are Laughinghouse's professional and personal papers, chiefly for the period 1916-1930: correspondence, medical reports, legal records, financial papers, photographs, and printed material. Most of the material pertains to Greenville and Pitt County, but files documenting Laughinghouse's service in the army and as a member of the North Carolina State Board of Health have a broader geographic scope. Series document Laughinghouse's medical practice, work as a school physician, service in the United States and France during World War I, and efforts to promote public hospitals. Additional files reflect efforts of the State Board of Health to improve public health in North Carolina. Personal files pertain to family matters, including the settlement of estates of members of the Grimes and Laughinghouse families, the management of farms in the Grimesland area, and business and civic activities in Greenville.

Biographical noteDr. Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse (1871-1930), son of Joseph John and Eliza (O'Hagan) Laughinghouse, was born near Grimesland, Pitt County, North Carolina. He began his medical career in 1893, working as a family doctor in the Greenville area. Laughinghouse served as physician for the East Carolina Teachers Training School in Greenville, saw service as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army during World War I, and was an active member of the North Carolina State Board of Health. An advocate of public hospitals, he worked to establish Pitt Community Hospital in Greenville. Laughinghouse engaged in a number of business activities, including management of family farming interests.
